So Why Weightlift?
Enjoyment/Achievement
I think the most important reason for doing anything is enjoyment. Weightlifting is a good leaisure activity that will help keep you healthy. For me, I personally like having a "sense of achievement" and weightlifting is very good for this because you know exactly where you stand. You can set yourself goals to aim for which can be very motivating for this. As a coach I put great importance on this aspect of training and not just for younger athletes.

Personal specification
Almost anyone can do weightlifting provided they are mobile and have a small amount of flexibility. For very young people and people just starting out, flexibility can be a big issue which can be the first stage of training. As a coach I put emphasis on being "the best you can be" and adapt programmes to suit everyone, regardless of their current level. It is a myth that only "fit" people can do weightlifting.
Relationship to other sports
Weightlifting is a very measurable and relatively simple functional sport which makes it excellent for improving all aspects which are needed in other sports - strength, power, explosive strength (Strength Speed), coordination, balance. So all the muscles in the body work together to perform a task, even if they are just acting as stabilizers.
An example of a direct relationship is CrossFit. We can teach how to lift in a way that is safe, achieve higher 1RMs and to effectively save energy in high repetition movements which is vital in CrossFit.
